Malcolm Jenkins agrees to 5-year deal with Eagles
Safety Malcolm Jenkins became the most recent member of the Eagles to sign a contract extension with the team on Monday and he pointed to another player that he’d like to see reach agreement on a new deal during a press conference announcing his pact. The club also re-signed defensive end Vinny Curry with a $47.25 million contract earlier this month as the new Eagles regime looks to build for the future under Doug Pederson.
Philadelphia Eagles’ Malcolm Jenkins (27) breaks up a pass intended for Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Vincent Jackson (83) during the first half of an NFL football game, Sunday, Nov. 22, 2015, in Philadelphia. Jenkins said he feels holding onto a few more interceptions might make the difference in getting him recognized as one of the league’s top safeties.
Jenkins is a rare player who can fit any scheme.
The seven-year veteran was entering the final season of his deal in 2016. He now will be with the Eagles through 2020 if he plays out the new contract. Meanwhile, Jenkins was credited with a team-high 233 tackles over the last two seasons.
Philadelphia has been known to miss on free agents, but Jenkins was one of their best signings in recent years and has outplayed the original contract he signed with the Eagles. He also talked about how much new Defensive Coordinator Jim Schwartz molds his defense to what his players do best. He won a championship with the Saints as a rookie in 2009 and remained in New Orleans through the 2013 season.
So now we venture into the lands of the unknown and have no idea what’s next, but what we do know is this team is sending its’ players and fans the right message. Yes, there were frustrating moments a year ago.
So will Jenkins get his wish of bringing Thurmond back? “I think the Eagles did a good job of obviously expressing that I’m definitely in the plans”.
Jenkins’ teammates have already taken to Twitter to congratulate him on his new deal. “Moving forward, that’s something that I’d like to continue, [having] input”.
