Malcolm Turnbull says Paris attack has ‘hallmarks’ of an Isis operation
Australia Prime Malcolm Turnbull has labelled attacks in Paris an assault meant to suppress freedom worldwide.
Ms Bishop addressed Australian media on Saturday morning as word broke from the French capital that up to 140 may have been killed in six separate attacks involving gunfire and explosives.
“When the French people left the stadium after that shocking attack they were not cowed”, he said.
FOREIGN Minister Julie Bishop has warned the thousands of Australians in France to “stay where they are” and “ensure they are safe” as a coordinated campaign of terror sweeps across Paris.
Speaking in Berlin, Turnbull said information about the terrorist attacks was still “very limited”, but the world stood “shoulder to shoulder with the people of France and with all free peoples in the battle against terrorism”.
“Our hearts break with yours, Paris”, Mr Baird earlier tweeted.
However, NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn says vigilance against local threats will likely be ramped up.
“We don’t know who carried out the horrendous attacks, but it has the hallmarks of recent ISIL/Daesh and similar organisations”.
“There are no reports of any Australians killed or injured at this stage”, Ms Bishop said.
Those who remain have been advised to heed the advice of French authorities and remain indoors and wait out the situation.
She said the department was providing consular assistance to the injured person.
“I offer the condolences of the people of Israel to the families of those murdered, and wish those wounded a speedy recovery”, he added.
“I can’t imagine I will be sleeping a lot tonight”.
“At this stage we do not intend to change the threat level”, she said.
The former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott said the terrorist attacks showed Australian security agencies had to be “backed at every turn” and given the intelligence gathering and surveillance powers they needed.
