Malmo prepares for Ibrahimovic return
Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored on his emotional return to Malmo as Paris Saint-Germain clinched their place in the Champions League last 16 with a convincing 5-0 win at the Swedbank Stadion.
Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi says the club will talk to Zlatan Ibrahimovic about extending his stay in the French capital after the striker equalled the club’s European goal record. Real have won Group A with a game to go. I was overjoyed to come back here.
Ibrahimovic has never before returned to Malmo to play a competitive game with a club side and, with tickets scarce, he arranged for the game to be shown on a big screen in the city’s main square, Stortorget.
However, he insists Troyes will enjoy going toe-to-toe with PSG and is hoping they can get a shock result.
Jean-Marc Furlan’s side managed to end a run of five-straight defeats with a 1-1 draw against Lille last time out, but they are still awaiting their first Ligue 1 victory of the season.
When asked about his position at the club, Hareide said: “I can not answer it”.
A double from the impressive Angel Di Maria, as well as Adrien Rabiot’s early opener and a stunning late free-kick from Lucas Moura, gave the scoreline a one-sided, but fair look, as PSG outclassed the pool’s bottom-placed side.
Mario Mandzukic scored the only goal of an entertaining game in the 18th minute, moments after City should have taken the lead. Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Madrid made sure of finishing top. However, Mexican forward Raul Jimenez pulled one back before half-time and then levelled the scores in the 72nd minute, and a draw against Atletico will see Benfica win the group.
Ibrahimovic started his career with Malmo and was on hand to punish them as he netted PSG’s third goal of the night.
“When discussing pregame, I said that we were happy about that, but the important thing was to get our qualification for the knockout stages”, he added.
On Tuesday, holders Barcelona qualified for the knockout stage with a 6-1 win over Roma, while Bayern Munich joined them by beating Olympiakos 4-0 and Zenit St Petersburg, who had already qualified, made it five wins in a row by beating Valencia 2-0 in Group H.
