Mammograms credited for early detection of breast cancer
October is here and it has become well known as breast cancer awareness month.
The night was highlighted with inspirational stories from three breast cancer survivors, Angela Hansen, Jolene TerHark and Carrie Zimmerle.
She was 26 when she found a lump on her breast four years ago, and was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer. “Radiologist Dr. Shannon Glass” from UT Health Northeast said fat cells produce estrogen and those with more estrogen are at a higher risk of breast cancer.
Early detection is also key because the longer a patient deals with undetected cancer, the more it will cost the patient to treat. Ultimately, it also costs the community more when rising numbers strain the system.
He said their campaign is normally just for breast cancer, but they decided to make a change this year.
For women who are dealing with the disease, The American Cancer Society partnered with Lima Memorial to offer a program called Look Good, Feel Better.
More than 230,000 USA women can expect a breast cancer diagnosis this year, but thanks to early diagnosis and advances in treatment, it’s far from a death sentence.
“I go every year for my exams and never ever anticipated that this would happen to me”, Istas said.
