Man accused of murdering British lawmaker appears in court
Curtis James, a 29-year-old Briton, who teaches English in Beijing, was shocked when he heard that Jo Cox, a British Member of Parliament, had been murdered.
A petition to award the George Cross medal for acts of great heroism to Bernard Kenny, 77, who was stabbed in the stomach as he tried to help Cox, had gathered more than 11,000 signatures Monday.
Parliament had been in recess for the European Union referendum, but was recalled so MPs could pay tribute to her.
LABOUR MPs gathering in the House of Commons today will each be wearing a white rose in memory of Jo Cox who died so tragically last week.
The killing of the 41-year-old mother-of-two outside the public library in Birstall in her West Yorkshire constituency has prompted an out-pouring of public grief.
Cox’s sister, Kim Leadbeater, made an emotional speech at a memorial in Birstall Saturday, telling those assembled that “our family is broken, but we will mend over time”.
Mrs Cox’s three-year-old daughter Lejla played with a drawing board as she sat on her father’s knee, while her son Cuillin, five, snuggled up to his grandmother. “Police say they’re following two primary lines of inquiry – into Mair’s mental condition and into his alleged ties to far-right nationalist and neo-Nazi groups“, Peter adds.
“Any death in such very bad circumstances is an outrage and a tragedy”.
Mrs Cox held the seat for just over a year after she was elected in May 2015 with a comfortable majority of 6,057 votes.
The prime minister was due to speak again at a “Remain” campaign event later on Monday, while opposition Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, was also due to be grilled by a live television audience as he makes his case for Remain.
“We are filled with sorrow for her husband Brendan and young children”, he said.
The Labour leader concluded: “Today we remember Jo’s compassion and her passion to create a better world”.
“Women MPs seem to suffer more from these people who spend their life sitting at their keyboards intimidating people and that is not acceptable”, the MP said.
Material relating to far right ideology was found in a search of his home, Cawthorne said.
Meanwhile, politicians on all sides in this area have expressed their horror at Mrs Cox’s death.
From July until March, Cox was a member of the Communities and Local Government committee so took part in all-party scrutiny of DCLG ministers, including Lewis.
Perhaps the most poignant tribute came from Nigel Dodds, MP for Belfast North. Speaking on behalf of all Northern Irish parties in the chamber, he said: “We in Northern Ireland have experienced direct and personal attempted murder attempts and have lost friends and colleagues to men of violence”.
