Man accused of threatening investigators in Fox Lake officer’s death
Saturday, an arrest warrant was issued for Battaglia for two counts of disorderly conduct (class 4 felonies). Deputies said Battaglia has called other law enforcement agencies and may have provided reporters covering the case with false tips as well.
The statement didn’t include a name of an attorney for Battaglia, and there was no publicly available telephone listing for a Joseph A. Battaglia in Oak Lawn so that he could comment on the allegations. He will appear in court Tuesday. He was arrested at his home and is now being held in the Lake County Jail on $100,000 bond. Rudd also has said he favors homicide, but doesn’t have sufficient evidence to make an official ruling.
Although police say Battaglia initially blocked his phone number, investigators traced the call to his residence in the 5600-block of W. 103rd Street in Oak Lawn.
All proceeds will benefit the family of Gliniewicz, who died in the line of duty on September 1, sparking an extensive manhunt for three suspects who have yet to be captured.
He allegedly threatened to harm a coroner and others unless they declared the shooting of Fox Lake Police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz (GLIHN’-uh-wihts) a suicide. Battaglia has “zero involvement” with the investigation, but he has phoned several media outlets that have run stories citing an anonymous source on the Fox Lake cop’s death, officials from the sheriff’s office said. “These threats included Coroner Rudd and Coroner’s Office employees, unless all the involved personnel declare Gliniewicz’ death a suicide”.
