Man arrested for jumping over White House fence on Thanksgiving
The man is thought to have cleared the fence as Barack Obama celebrates Thanksgiving with his family, U.S. media reports.
Gonzalez, who was convicted in connection with the incident, jumped the fence and bolted past several layers of security before a Secret Service agent detained him, prompting a review of the agencys practices and the resignation of Director Julia Pierson.
The man, whose identity has not been released, breached a barricade before jumping over a fence on the North Lawn that was recently outfitted with 7-inch steel spikes to deter such acts.
Secret Service officers had their guns drawn and were accompanied by K-9 units, according to two CNN photojournalists who saw the incident. By that time, the south and north fence lines were closed temporarily.
The lockdown has been lifted.
The Obamas had spent Thanksgiving at the White House for a traditional meal that included roast turkey, ham, cranberry relish, cornbread stuffing and other traditional dishes.
In January, a hobbyist crashed a drone on the southeast side of the White House grounds. The incident took place about 2:45 p.m. EST. A man came forward and told authorities he was flying the drone recreationally in the middle of the night and didn’t mean to fly his quadcopter over the complex. A second image shows the man standing on the lawn with his arms raised in victory.
