Man charged after jumping over White House fence on Thanksgiving
A year ago, Secret Service officials proposed making the fence taller than its current 7-foot, 6-inch height.
The north and south fence lines at the White House were temporarily closed, Secret Service spokesman Robert Hoback said.
In the hours after the incident, numerous armed security personnel were seen along the streets and sidewalks outside the executive mansion.
President Barack Obama and his wife and daughters were spending the holiday at the White House. He was released into the custody of the United States Secret Service to be transported to the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program at St. Elizabeth Hospital in order to to undergo an evaluation pending a hearing Monday in the US District Court.
One woman was arrested in July in a similar incident, and another person was arrested in April.
The Washington Post cited a witness who took photos of the incident showing a U.S. flag-draped man vaulting the fence and landing on the other side, arms outstretched.
The photographer Vanessa Pena told CNN, the man reportedly took a deep breath before jumping over a barricade and then the fence. “It was pretty unexpected”.
The property address, otherwise known as the White House, has been the location where various trespassing crimes have been committed over the years.
Joseph Caputo, 22, of CT, scaled the north fence on Thursday afternoon and gained access to the north grounds, but was immediately arrested, the Secret Service said.
