Man charged in beating of Alabama mayor outside barber shop
YouTube Talladega Mayor Larry Barton (l.) has accused a former televised radio co-host, Benny Green (r.), of attacking him outside a barbershop on Saturday morning.
In an interview on Sunday, Barton, who was re-elected in 2011 after serving three years in prison for fraud, told NBC News that he was attacked on Saturday morning after he arrived at a parking lot outside the barber shop in Vestavia Hills where he works part time.
That’s when Barton says the attack started.
Barton, 75, told police that he allegedly was attacked while getting out of his auto by the suspect with something similar baseball bat.
Gilham said the suspect’s name and additional information will likely be released Monday morning when warrants are obtained. Green “attempted to flee the scene on a bicycle”, the release said, “however bystanders managed to intervene and detain him until our arrival”. “If he had been able to get me out of the auto it would have been over”.
Green’s former lawyer has offered his own theory to AL.com regarding Barton’s beat down.
“The door opened, I looked around, there was a guy there with a trench coat or something and had something on his head”.
Barton said he was only able to get away because he kicked the man repeatedly. “He told me he had to kill me”, Barton said from his UAB hospital room, where was treated for injuries to his head, face, eye and jaw. “He fell on the ground”. Barton says he fought back against the man. One of them involves Barton being videotaped having sex with another man’s wife.
However, the Greens are now in the process of a divorce.
Barton – asked directly – said he was not involved with Green’s wife.
