Man City gets comeback win vs. Burnley
Manchester City’s Spanish manager Pep Guardiola awaits kick-off in the English Premier League football match between Burnley and Manchester City at Turf Moor in Burnley, north west England on November 26, 2016.
Aguero bagged his 32 and 33 goals in just 34 Premier League appearances at Turf Moor, and Guardiola declared he could tell the Argentine was in a confident mood.
While City struggled to cope with the aerial barrage in the second half, Burnley were probably overly direct at times with too many hopeful balls launched from the back.
But the visitors began to find their momentum as the game approached the half-hour, Fernandinho laying the ball off for Aguero, who smashed a first-time effort high over the top, and they wanted a penalty when Matthew Lowton challenged Nolito inside the area.
Wilfried Zaha opened the scoring for Palace but Bob Bradley’s Swans looked set for their first win since the opening day of the season as a Gylfi Sigurdsson free kick and a brace from Leroy Fer put them 3-1 midway through the second half.
They were unlucky not to have been awarded an early penalty when Jeff Hendrick was shoved in the back by Nicolas Otamendi.
And the gloss was nearly taken off a workmanlike City performance and result when Michael Keane, watched by England boss Gareth Southgate, headed for goal and Aleksandar Kolarov hooked clear.
Manchester City have kept just two clean sheets in their last 16 league games.
“It was a hard physical game and I think we responded very well”.
Of all Burnley’s potential sources of goals, a 25-yard volley from Marney would have been a long way down the list, but the midfielder met Otamendi’s header perfectly and guided the ball into the bottom corner for his first goal since March 2014.
Pep Guardiola’s side lacked fluency and intensity but Aguero’s supreme poaching instincts came to the fore as he converted a 37th-minute corner and was on hand to net in similarly scrappy fashion with an hour played.
Burnley were a mess defensively in their last game and they will want to tighten things-up in this one.
“I think that is the spirit we need”.
“I’m disappointed in the outcome, make no mistake, no matter who we’re playing, a win is what I enjoy – but we went about it the right way, a massive reaction, massively different performance from Monday night, and we have to take that on the road now”. This wasn’t a game that can really be tactically analysed, but it was a relatively high tempo game that City played well in.
Burnley’s first goal pretty much mirrored their entire game plan, long balls to Sam Vokes and then hope for the absolute best.
