Man decapitated acquaintance he suspected of rape
Itasca County Search and Rescue and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension also assisted in the ongoing investigation.
A northern Minnesota man faces a murder charge for allegedly beating and decapitating a man he believed raped his girlfriend.
Thoresen, 35, allegedly bludgeoned 20-year-old David A. Haiman with a baseball bat before stabbing him in the abdomen and cutting off his head with a machete on Sunday.
Thoresen, now facing up to 40 years in prison if convicted, is believed to have disposed of Haiman’s head and torso at separate locations in the Itasca County area woods. She told authorities she tried to stop him, but that Thoresen took a large knife from the Haiman’s belt loop and cut off his head.
He then threw his head into the woods.
Bail was set at 2 million dollars (£1.5 million) without conditions during his first court appearance on Wednesday. The vehicle travelled about six miles before sliding into the ditch and the officer noted that the passenger door opened and the passenger lost his shoe in an attempt to get out.
Haiman showed up at their apartment after Thoresen invited him over.
Haiman had been reported missing Saturday to Hibbing police.
She said they drove around the woods, and Haiman repeatedly swore at them and called her a “slut”.
The girlfriend told police that the group left in Haiman’s vehicle and drove to Deer River to “smoke some bud”.
A third party told law enforcement that Thoresen had told him the same details of the incident prior to his arrest.
The man added that Thoresen also brought a machete to the residence, along with a bag of property. When Thoresen agreed to show his cellphone to investigators, they found that the two men had communicated by text message on June 20. He is in the Itasca County Jail awaiting formal charges. The two confronted Haiman at the apartment as he arrived, punching, kicking and tying him up, according to court records.
She punched him in the face multiple times, breaking his nose, according to the criminal complaint. After that, Thoresen punched Haiman and told him he shouldn’t have raped “my girl”. The three then drove around the woods before the alleged killing occurred.
