Man dies trying to pull another from ledge at Hawaii dorm
Police said the man who died was attempting to bring inside an apparently distraught 19-year-old who had exited onto a ledge of the Hale Wainani dormitory in Honolulu out of an upper-story window.
Both men fell to the ground and were critically injured, police said in a statement. The elder man was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, while the younger remained in critical condition as of Monday.
Meanwhile, the identity of the 24-year-old man may not be released until the Medical Examiner’s Office completes its investigations, which could take several days, the agency told the newspaper.
According to the school, neither of the men were students.
A student who lived at the dorm had people over, and the two men were among them, Meisenzahl said.
It’s possible one or two of them were living there Sunday when the incident happened, Meisenzahl said. “We don’t ever want to see anybody get hurt or killed on campus and our condolences go out to their family”.
University of Hawaii’s classes have not started for the fall semester, but some students and others were staying in the dormitory. “Getting intoxicated could have pushed him over the edge”.
Counseling services have been offered to all university students. The dorm is usually occupied by about 600 students when school is in session. The incident occurred shortly before hundreds of students were scheduled to move into their own dorms.
Students assigned to the Hale Wainani buildings, which tend to be for upperclassmen, are expected to move in on Friday. Of it’s population of 18,000, about 4,000 live on campus, according to the Associated Press.
