Man divorces wife on Whatsapp in India
According to The Times of India, a 27-year-old man took bad breakups to a whole new level by dumping his 21-year-old wife over WhatsApp.
A man divorced his 21-year-old wife over WhatsApp just four weeks after marriage, an Indian newspaper reported.
The Kerala State Women’s Commission has sought the opinion of Muslim scholars and clerics over the issue in the light of a steady rise in cases of talaqs pronounced through social media platforms and chatting apps like Skype, WhatsApp and email services.
J Prameela Devi, member of the women’s commission, revealed a shocking statement made by the woman’s estranged husband: “He said she was like an apple, and he had already tasted it. So he did not want her anymore, ” reports Times of India. Her mother had paid the groom a dowry of one million rupees and also given him 80 sovereigns of gold. In the next adalat, the commission even ordered to present the guy’s parents.
When the validity of Talaq is to be discussed, a member of Samastha Kerala Jam-Iyyathul Ulama said that, the talaq is valid. She said the only message she got was this Talaq message on WhatsApp. Sayyed Attakoya Thangal, the district president of the Ulama stated, “The divorce, on the other hand, might be granted best after protecting discussions with each the person and wife and their members of the family”.
However, another member of the same organisation questioned the validity of the WhatsApp talaq, saying that it could not be considered as a legal document.
Talaq can be done only under unavoidable circumstances and conditions. A few people are playing with religion”, he said.”Talaq can not be practised in such a flimsy manner. So hope the Oral Talaqs gets invalid, supporting the women lives in the country.
