Man facing charges after Calgary Stampede ‘Balloon Chair’ stunt
A MAN has been arrested after tying 100 balloons to a garden chair and flying over the city of Calgary.
Police have charged the man with mischief and say more charges could be on the way.
Strong winds caused Boria to miss his target on the ground in Stampede Park, and he landed a few kilometers away, in an industrial field in the city’s southeast.
CBC News reports that Daniel Boria did the stunt to gain attention for his cleaning products business.
“He sat in the chair and began floating over Calgary”.
His flight didn’t go as planned, though.
The charges against Daniel Boria have not been proven in a court of law.
“But there’s still the question of the chair being up in the air”, Grant said.
“I rose to a certain altitude and the winds got pretty intense”.
Unable to maneuver the makeshift cockpit, Boria had to jump down shortly after he took off. Even though he had a parachute on his back, his sudden landing resulted in him injuring both his ankles. “We’re in the midst of tracking that down”, said Boria’s friend Conner Shauf.
“A guy was driving by and was going to give me a ride”, he said.
The stunt is similar to a scene in the film Danny Deckchair, in which a man becomes a national sensation when he lifts off in his deck chair tied to balloons.
Several people took to social media after spotting Mr Boria’s publicity attempt, including local graphic designer Tom Warne, who tweeted: “Hope it’s not a Stampede balloon vendor out of control”.
But instead, Boria got a ride in a different kind of vehicle.
