Man Falls Off Cliff While Walking With an Electronic Device
A man distracted by his electronic device fell 60 feet to his death at San Diego’s Sunset Cliffs on Christmas Day, San Diego Lifeguards confirmed to NBC 7 San Diego.
Witnesses told lifeguards that the man may have been distracted by some kind of an electronic device, Marine Safety Lieutenant Rich Stropky said on Saturday.
The accident occured at around 5 p.m. on Friday near Sunset Cliffs Blvd.
Authorities say the details as to what Burwell was doing with the phone or electronic device are unclear, but according to NBC, a number of witnesses say they believe he might have been trying to take a selfie.
San Diego Lifeguards said the victim, identified as a man in his 30s, went to Sunset Cliffs in a vehicle with a passenger and had trouble finding parking at the popular ocean viewing site in the 900 block of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard.
‘They acted quickly, they found a way to get down the cliff, ‘ Bender told the NBC affiliate station.
Teenager Thor Wilink was another witness at the scene who rushed from his home located across the street to help bringing ropes and lapel gear.
Three people reportedly climbed down the rocks to save him, but he died died at the scene.
Bender warned that people need to be more aware of their surroundings.
“Just like driving and using your cellphone, you don’t want to be walking and using your cell phone”, Bender said.
