Man hailed as hero after charging, disarming Waffle House gunman
Later Sunday morning, he apparently “clothed himself with a pair of trousers”, Aaron said.
Nashville authorities now believe that Reinking’s father later gave the firearms to his son.
Mr Aaron said three people died at the restaurant and one person died at Vanderbilt University Medical Centre, where two others were being treated for gunshot wounds.
A gunman opened fire at about 3:25 a.m. (4:25 a.m. ET) in Antioch, part of the Nashville area on April 22, 2018.
Nevertheless, people on social media would disagree, as Shaw Jr. has received a lot of praise online for his actions.
“No doubt he saved many lives”, Aaron said of the customer, who he described as a hero.
Police told CNN the man shed his jacket before fleeing on foot.
Reinking moved to the Nashville area past year.
Police don’t believe Reinking is still armed, though they’re not ruling out that possibility.
He “was last seen walking southbound on Murfreesboro Pike”, Aaron said, adding, “He was nude”. Police were still searching for him late Sunday morning.
Reinking was arrested by the U.S. Secret Service for being in a restricted area near the White House in July, 2017. He echoed the police, calling that man a hero. “I do take pride in him helping save the lives of other people”. (AP) A shattered window at the scene of the shooting. Two other shooting victims remain hospitalized.
29, is credited as the customer that stopped the gunman in a Tennessee Waffle House on Sunday morning, according to KHOU. Shaw was able to wrestle the rifle away from the shooter.
“His gun either got jammed or he was trying to reload, not exactly sure”, Shaw told WTVF.
“I looked back and I saw a person lying on the ground right at the entrance of the door, then I jumped and slid …”
Waffle House, which has more than 1,500 locations across the country, offered its condolences.
The Sheriff’s Office says there is no word on where Reinking intends to go so the public should be on alert.
“I remember I was like “Dang, I’m basically in a barrel”, he said. “There is no place for me to go!” “He saved lives – that is certain and we are all thankful to him for his bravery”, Briley said.
Local reporter Natalie Allison wrote: “Some SWAT guys approached suspect’s apartment, used a speaker to call him out and then there was a loud bang I could hear a mile away down the street”.
“I’m not a hero”, Shaw said.
But so far, the motive for the shooting remains unclear.
The shooter was identified as 29-year-old Travis Reinking from Morton, Ill. Waffle House said he’s just a regular person who acted to save himself.
Two victims died inside the Waffle House and one outside, while a fourth died at the hospital.
