Man has leg amputated after yet another shocking escalator accident in
A cleaner’s leg has been amputated after it became stuck in an escalator in a Shanghai mall – less than a week after a mother was killed when she fell through an escalator floorplate in a similar freak accident.
The footage, which was acquired from the mall by Shanghai television broadcaster Dragon TV, shows two people jumping over the top platform of the escalator just before a janitor, surnamed Zhang, walked over to mop its steps.
The lower left leg of the cleaner was amputated after the escalator collapsed during the weekend.
It comes after a 30-year-old woman died from a horrific escalator accident in Hubei province on Sunday July 27.
She managed to save her son but was “swallowed” by the escalator’s machinery. On Friday, a toddler’s arm got caught in an escalator, this time at a mall in the southern Guangxi region, when he tripped after wandering away from his parents.
It is the third high-profile escalator-related tragedy to befall China in a week, further increasing the paranoia among users in the country.
Authorities from the Market Monitoring Bureau of Shanghai’s Changning district told CCTV that they are now conducting an investigation into the incident.
Questions have been raised about escalator manufacturers’ safety standards.
Nobody was riding the escalator at the time of the incident, according to local reports.
The central government has ordered all provincial governments, including that of Shanghai, to inspect and make sure that escalators in every mall operate properly before August 10.
