Man, I wish I’d picked a different AG!
Gowdy said he believes Trump would have picked someone else had he known Sessions would step back from that investigation. At some point, he said, Sessions will “have to make a decision” that if “you don’t have the confidence” of the president, “that will affect your ability to be effective”.
“And I wish I did”, Trump answered in a tweet that quoted Gowdy’s remarks. Control of the investigation was shifted to Mueller when he was appointed special counsel after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey in May 2017.
Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, a former New York City Mayor, told the Times that Sessions could have made a U-turn and helmed the Russian Federation probe despite fears of a conflict of interest.
A new report from The New York Times published on Tuesday illustrates how the relationship between Trump and Sessions devolved in the months after Sessions’ recusal. Conservative writer Leon Wolf, who works as an editor at The Blaze, theorizes that campaigning for Trump in 2016 and defending even his most repulsive statements has left Sessions essentially immune from embarrassment and shame. And at least one government informant met several times with Mr. Page and Mr. Papadopoulos, current and former officials said.
“Gowdy doesn’t get it”, Hannity said. I can’t think of any major case I handled in 20 years where there was not someone willing to provide information.
Gowdy today said he had “never heard the term “spy” used” and did not see evidence of that.
The congressman appeared on “CBS This Morning” Wednesday where he sympathized with Trump’s frustration with the attorney general.
“Remember, special counsel writes a report”, Giuliani said.
Trump has crossed the line time and again for the objective of throwing suspicion on investigators, investigating political enemies, providing highly confidential information to his congressional allies and seeking to protect himself and his associates. Trump reportedly unleashed a bevy of insults against Sessions, calling him an “idiot” and accusing him of being disloyal.
And the scope of the special counsel’s investigation may include whether Trump broke the law in trying to frustrate the Russian Federation investigation – by asking Comey to lay off, by reportedly asking other intelligence bosses how to get Comey off the case, by firing Comey or by leaning on Sessions. Giuliani on Wednesday only offered assurances Trump would not fire Sessions during the Mueller investigation, because of the “distraction” it would cause.
