Man In the High Castle fills subway cars with Nazi symbols
Amazon appear to be desperate to create an impact for their new TV series, The Man In The High Castle, but has it gone too far?
Folks who ride the NY City subway have lately been treated to loads of imagery evocative of Nazi Germany thanks to a promotional campaign for the new Amazon series The Man in the High Castle.
The 260 poster ads include the Nazi Reichsadler eagle but do not contain any swastikas. That’s a compelling image on the show, which is about a United States that was conquered by the Germans and Japanese following WWII-but it’s a pretty tough one to be confronted with when you just happen to get onto a subway vehicle.
The promotion for the show, which be available for streaming in January, will be emblazoned on the subway until December 14.
That same year, an ad for Bravo’s A Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce was banned on buses in both NY and Los Angeles for “inappropriate material”.
Amazon has been criticised over an advertising stunt in which the interior of a carriage on the NY Subway has been decorated with Nazi-inspired fascist imagery.
The MTA told Gothamist that the ads meet the service’s standards, which leaves them powerless to remove them.
“The updated standards prohibit political advertisements”, MTA spokesperson Adam Lisberg told Gothamist.
The seats on a 42nd Street shuttle train in NY City have been decked out in the symbols of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, providing riders with what for some is an overly immersive experience of that alternate reality. “That’s why they’re in advertising”, Mr Lisberg said.
