Man Intended to Kill Trump at Las Vegas Rally
The shooter, Omar Mateen, reportedly pledged allegiance to ISIS before killing 49 people and injuring dozens more in Orlando.
Metro Police say the 19-year-old arrested during Saturday’s Donald Trump rally tried to disarm an officer. Mateen, 29, was born in NY.
It said that Mr Sandford, who had a British driver’s license, told investigators that he had purchased tickets for a rally in Phoenix where he “would try again to kill Trump” in the event his plan in Las Vegas failed.
A young protester wearing a Trump 2016 sticker was booted from the rally by Las Vegas police, but he was not immediately identified.
“The officers assigned to the event were able to quickly take Sandford into custody with little further disruption at the venue”, Metro said.
Local cops handed Sandford over to the Secret Service, who did not respond to Daily News calls requesting comment. The Secret Service says it has charged Sandford with violating two federal laws following the incident, including assault, and he could face up to a decade in prison if convicted. Attendees had to pass through metal detectors manned by Secret Service, police and casino security officials. The Secret Service said Saturday other charges are still pending and the incident remains under investigation.
