Man Jailed for Stealing Snickers Bar Dies In Police Custody
Mitchell’s family had not been able to visit him in jail, because he had not given officials his relatives’ names as approved visitors. He was nicknamed Weezy.
Mitchell’s aunt, Roxanne Adams, said that her nephew’s body was “extremely emaciated” and that he had practically no muscle mass.
The 24-year-old Mitchell’s body is still awaiting an autopsy, but his family believe that he starved to death after refusing to eat or take his medication. “It is extraordinary. The person I saw deceased was not even the same person”. Adams is a registered nurse.
When asked which state agency was ultimately responsible for ensuring Mitchell was transferred to the hospital, a court clerk said: “It’s hard to tell who’s responsible for it”.
“He was just deteriorating so fast”, Adams told The Guardian.
“He never did anything serious, never harmed anybody, his aunt said”.
A clerk at Portsmouth district court said Mitchell was accused of stealing a bottle of Mountain Dew, a Snickers bar and a Zebra Cake worth a total of £3.25 from a corner shop.
Mitchell was charged with petty larceny and trespassing.
“As of right now it is deemed “natural causes”, Natasha Perry, the master jail officer at the Hampton Roads regional jail said.
Soon after, a court clerk ruled that he was not competent enough to stand trial and ordered that he be transferred to a mental health facility instead, to receive treatment.
Maria Reppas, a spokeswoman for the department which runs Eastern Hospital, said she would not discuss why a hospital bed for Mitchell was apparently not found. Mitchell had a history of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. So he remained at the jail.
Mitchell’s arrest records show that he had a prior conviction of larceny or a similar charge.
Portsmouth Police are investigating the death of an inmate in Hampton Roads Regional Jail. Mitchell was found unresponsive in his cell about 5:45 AM on August 19, 2015 and he was pronounced dead shortly after.
Jamycheal Mitchell, 24, that had social anxiety issues, was also noticed duplicity on the carpet and tile of his chamber by watches. He was an altar boy at his local catholic church.
