Man killed in Detroit during struggle with Dearborn officer
– The National Action Network will be speaking out after a man was fatally shot by a Dearborn police officer in Detroit on Wednesday.
According to Detroit Police Chief James Craig, the off-duty Dearborn cop spotted a man whom he recognized as a suspect wanted on misdemeanor probation violation.
Craig said the Dearborn Police officer’s uniform was torn, equipment off of his belt was in disarray at the scene and he sustained minor injuries. Dearborn police Chief Ron Haddad declined to talk about the officer, including his time in the suburban department.
Rev. D. Alexander Bullock of Change Agent Consortium told the Free Press that the rally is set for noon Saturday and that more protests may be planned, similar to what has taken place in Minnesota in recent weeks over an officer-involved shooting there last month.
“The officer approached the subject, a 36-year-old Detroit resident, and the subject fled on foot”. Williams had escaped from officers earlier after allegedly committing a larceny in Dearborn. “We only want justice, and a fair investigation”. The Dearborn officer was patrolling in the area of Tireman and Greenfield about 12:30 p.m. when he observed the man and stopped to question him.
Police have not released the names of the suspect or the officer.
Haddad says the shooting is “extremely tragic”, and he offered condolences to the family of the victim. Matthews was black. No further information was released about either individual.
Detroit police and the Michigan State Police are investigating.
