Man missing for 30 years realizes who he is
A missing person’s case in Canada has been solved after 30 years… after the missing man remembered his real name.
Edgar Latulip, missing since 1968, was found living under a different name in St. Catharines, Ont., in January, 75 miles from where he was last seen.
After arriving and making his way to St. Catharines, Ontario, he somehow fell and suffered a head injury, causing him to lose his memory and his identity.
Mr Latulip, who has a mental age of 12, voluntarily submitted to a DNA test along with a member of his family which positively confirmed his identity.
Latulip was 21 years old when he walked away from a Kitchener, Ont., group home on September 2, 1986.
“I know of some other cases where a long-term disappearance has been resolved and the person has been located safe”, Dion said.
At the time of his disappearance, police believed Latulip, who has a developmental delay, took a bus and travelled to the Niagara Falls area. “Having an answer would mean closure”, Silvia Wilson told the Record. “I think it’s a lot to take in”.
Niagara Regional Police officer Philip Gavin said: “Pieces of his memory started coming back”.
” you anticipate the toughest whenever there is a person absent for that time period”.
Gavin said police had never given up on Edgar, even though most missing persons cases don’t have happy endings.
As to how Latulip is reacting to the surprising discovery, a spokesman for the Niagara Regional Police Service, Phil Gavin, told the Associated Press that he is adjusting to the news slowly. It’s satisfying because most of these cases don’t turn out this way. “I had been near a breakdown”.
Then, police phoned Latulip’s mother, who now lives in Ottawa.
What she really wants now is for her son to have the chance to speak for himself, without being caught up in a media circus.
“I want to talk to him and help him out any way I can”, she said.
“My understanding is she is pretty excited”, said Gavin.
Alana Holtom, speaking for Waterloo Regional Police, said she spoke to Latulip’s mother on Wednesday after a detective had given her the news.
