Man named Santa Claus to represent the people of North Pole
There is a real man whose legal name is Santa Claus, and he was recently elected to sit on the city council for an Alaskan town called North Pole.
Election results posted on the city’s website confirms that Claus won a three year-term with 58 write-in votes from the town of roughly 2,000 people.
He could be seen in recent days wearing his trademark red velvet outfit and holding a campaign sign in North Pole, the namesake of the home of the legendary Christmas gift-giver.
According to his Facebook profile, which is public, Claus is the only man legally named Santa Claus to ever to live in North Pole, Alaska.
But will Santa Claus be too tied up with his municipal government responsibilities to pull off a successful Christmas?
Elyse Dawson, whose write-in campaign started even closer to the election, also earned a seat on the council with 29 votes.
He will take office on October 26, North Pole City Clerk Kathy Weber said.
“My thanks to everyone who voted for me… and all who supported my campaign”, Claus wrote on Facebook.
“The media coverage was tremendous – locally, nationally, and internationally”.
“I’m really happy with the candidates we did get”. He notes that while he may look like Santa Claus and shares his name, he doesn’t share the unbridled message of consumerism that Claus has come to encompass. He and two other candidates had been seeking to fill two vacant seats on the council.
