Man once imprisoned for road rage killing dies in road rage killing
According to reports, Gary Durham, 40, got out of his vehicle and walked over to Robert Padgett’s auto.
Durham was released from prison four years ago for the 2001 killing of 48-year-old Timothy Gibbs in another road rage incident.
Padgett faces no charges yet and was released by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office pending a review of the incident. That man, 42-year-old Roger Padgett, pulled his handgun and shot Durham once.
Sheriff’s deputies were called to Martin Luther King Boulevard in the Tampa suburbs about a shooting – and when they got there, they found Durham lying dead in the street, with Robert Padgett standing nearby. Gibbs died of a brain hemhorage three days later.
The intersection will be closed for the next few hours for the investigation, deputies say. After the two almost collided, Durham followed Gibbs to a nearby parking lot, where they both got out of their vehicles.
Investigators say Gibbs hit his head on the pavement after being punched by Durham. “I’m just glad I don’t have to worry about him or running into him somewhere”.
She also spoke out to Padgett, telling ABC News: “I just want the man who shot him to know he should not feel bad”.
Durham was convicted of manslaughter in association with the 2001 case and was made to serve 11 years of imprisonment.
Durham’s wife, Heather, told the Tampa Bay Times that they married in 2015, after he was released on probation.
“Don’t engage with people, it’s not worth it over some sort of traffic related incident, or you’re five minutes late to work or school, just drive by and ignore the person and don’t get into some type of confrontation”, the sheriff’s department spokespreson told WFLA-TV.
