Man pleads not guilty in stabbings of woman, 3 children
A man arrested in the stabbings of his girlfriend and her three small children has pleaded not guilty to charges including murder and attempted murder. They say he took the ferry back to Manhattan and was nabbed in Queens on Saturday.
Police are offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to Sykes’ arrest.
Rebecca Cutler, 26, along with her 19-month-old daughter Ziana and 4-month-old Maiyah died in the attack at a Ramada Inn on Staten Island. Cutler’s 2-year-old daughter was clinging to life after the attack, officials said. Authorities said Sykes was the father of the youngest child. He then traveled to Brooklyn before landing at a friend’s apartment in Astoria.
According to ABC, police said Sykes had stabbed Cutler more than 30 times in the back. Enlarge Sykes stabbed Rebecca Cutler (r.) 47 times, sources said, and the three children were all stabbed multiple times before being discovered by a housekeeper at the hotel.
He was awaiting arraignment Sunday.
Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said nobody apparently heard or saw what happened, but hotel surveillance video shows Sykes entering Cutler’s hotel room just before 9 a.m. Wednesday and leaving four minutes later. But authorities said a domestic incident report was filed with police Tuesday after Sykes was accused of stealing Cutler’s phone, claiming she was contacting another man. Officials said there was no history of domestic violence between Cutler and Sykes.
The New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, a group that includes both NYPD officers and U.S. Marshals, apprehended Sykes outside of a friend’s home on 31st Street, in Woodside, Queens at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Sykes was arraigned Sunday in criminal court on Staten Island.
“Thanks goes to the hard-working officers of the NYPD for bringing Mr. Sykes into custody”.
Cutler had been living in the hotel since December as part of the Department of Homeless Services shelter system, authorities said.
Cops were still hunting Thursday for the jealous boyfriend accused of hacking to death a young mother and her two baby daughters, including his own, in a Staten Island hotel.
De Blasio also told FOX that the other 28 homeless families staying at the hotel, where the murder occurred, had been relocated. The hotel had been housing families who would otherwise be homeless. “We expect and demand that you take immediate action to protect shelter residents”.
