Man Released In Connection With Paul McCauley Murder
One of two men arrested by detectives investigating the sectarian killing of a popular civil servant in Northern Ireland has been released on bail.
Mr McCauley, a 38-year-old Catholic, spent nearly a decade in a vegetative state after he was attacked by loyalists at a barbecue in the Waterside area of Derry in July 2006.
The two men were arrested on Thursday in L’Derry and Coleraine on suspicion of murder and the attempted murder of two other men injured in the attack.
A woman arrested on Wednesday night on suspicion of witholding information has also been bailed. At 3.20am on 16 July, only three people remained at the BBQ. After the assault the group made off in the direction of Irish Street.
Police stepped up their investigation into the attack following Mr McCauley’s death.
“This is a very active investigation”.
“Please come forward and tell us what you saw or heard or what you know”.
On Saturday last, Piper John McClements, who has served a prison sentence for causing grievous bodily harm to Mr McCauley, appeared at a special sitting of Dery Magistrates Court court charged with his murder.
