Man Shot by Police in Reisterstown Dies
Baltimore County police on Friday identified a man fatally shot by an officer in Reisterstown, a suburban area outside Baltimore.
The video shows the officer fire “swiftly” as McLeod’s hand comes forward from his back.
Police declined to release the footage Thursday.
“There was a confrontation behind these businesses and there were multiple shots fired”, Baltimore County police spokeswoman Elise Armacost said.
He was taken to Northwest hospital where doctors declared him dead despite efforts to save his life, police said on Friday. Witnesses reported the officer told the man to stop, police said. Thursday’s statement said: “A weapon was not found”.
Authorities have yet to release the surveillance footage, clting the ongoing homicide investigation.
The officer has been placed on routine administrative leave, according to the Baltimore Sunday. The video shows McLeod moving toward the officer, who has his gun drawn.
The department has an agreement with the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge that requires officials to wait 48 hours after a shooting by an officer to identify that officer, and only release the officer’s last name, rank and assignment.
A state medical examiner confirmed that he was shot three times, according to a police statement. “The video shows the officer had every reason to believe the suspect was armed and that he was in danger”. Police said he has been with the department since 2005 and this is the first shooting in which he has been involved.
Investigators said McLeod gave a store employee a forged prescription for Promethazine plus codeine, a narcotic cough syrup often combined with alcohol to produce a high.
Reisterstown, Maryland, is about 55 miles from D.C., and 25 miles from Baltimore.
