Man shot, police vehicle window smashed in Ferguson

The shots were fired in area of Ferguson and West Florissant early Monday, according to police.

An AFP journalist heard about two dozen shots ring out and saw one bloodied protester lying on the ground.

A shooting and a police vehicle window was smashed during two separate incidents in Ferguson.

Police had been taking a stand-off position prior to the looting.

Brown’s death, and a grand jury decision to spare Darren Wilson, the officer who shot him, from criminal charges sparked a prolonged wave of demonstrations in Ferguson last year that boiled over into rioting and arson at times and spawned sympathy rallies across the country.

Brown’s death started the #BlackLivesMatter movement and led to protests and a push for change after several similar incidents later in 2014 and in 2015.

Police have told FOX2 that the victim in the officer involved shooting was transported to the hospital.

White doves were released after 4-1/2 minutes of silence to represent the roughly 4-1/2 hours that Brown’s body lay in the middle of the street after he was shot.

Several protesters jumped over a barricade around the building and faced off with police officers, although the crowd eventually dispersed without violence.

Protesters grew more confrontational later, when around 200 people gathered outside the police headquarters chanting: “Hey hey, ho ho, these killer cops have got to go!”

The riots that erupted in Ferguson spread to other US cities and energized debate on how white police officers in America treat blacks, especially young black men and particularly when it comes to the use of lethal force. The shooting occurred near the church where a Michael Brown memorial service was being held.
