Man suffers suspected shark bite in WA
Electrical apprentice Eli Zawadzki, 18, suffered a deep laceration to one foot when he was bitten by the animal yesterday afternoon while surfing at Pyramids Beach.
“He is going to be OK, he’s having surgery this morning”, she said.
The Department of Fisheries said the species of shark was not known but it was investigating the incident.
While it is not yet know if the attack was provoked, Pyramids Beach has been closed until Thursday morning when officials will reassess safety concerns. That includes sharks believed to have been involved in an attack.
They reported the shark bite incident soon after.
It was later scrapped after the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) recommended it be discontinued.
The attack near Mandurah marks the first shark attack on West Australian beaches in 2015.
If a shark is spotted, the public is asked to report it to Water Police on 9442 8600.
The department said the shark detections could be attributed to the increase to high numbers of salmon and spawning snapper, which congregate in Cockburn Sound, next to Garden Island.
