Man taken to hospital after train strikes vehicle on the line
Network Rail spokesman Ross Easton said the accident involved a train travelling from Kings Lynn to London King’s Cross.
According to British Transport Police the man, thought to be in his 40s, has been airlifted to hospital after his Land Rover was struck at Nairns level crossing in Cambridgeshire.
The level crossing between Ely and Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire is used by fewer than 10 vehicles each day, Network Rail said, and is “user-worked”.
A MAN is now being treated for a severe head injury after his auto was hit by a train between Cambridge and Ely.
An ambulance spokesman said the alarm was raised at 2.34pm on Friday and several vehicles, including an air ambulance attended.
115 passengers on the train were safely transferred to another train, Cambridge News reports.
Train journeys were being disrupted by the incident with passengers on Abellio Greater Anglia, CrossCountry and Great Northern, which all use the line, warned they could face delays or cancellations to services until around 7pm.
A statement on the operator’s website said: “Train services running through these stations will be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised”.
“We are assisting the emergency services at the scene”. “Disruption is expected until 19:00”.
Great Northern rail tweeted: “Due to a train hitting an obstruction on the line between Ely and Cambridge all lines are blocked”.
A passenger who was on the train that struck the vehicle, tweeted: “On train between Ely and Cambridge we just hit a auto. An air ambulance just arrived on the scene”.
