Man to get life without parole in Vegas slaying of USA airman
Michelle Paet dabbed with a tissue at her eyes as attorneys talked Wednesday about evidence presented to a jury that found co-defendant Michael Rodriguez guilty last week of murder, conspiracy, burglary and weapon charges.
Paet’s wife, Michelle Paet, meanwhile, is next to go on trial, which is scheduled for next Monday, October 5.
On Thursday, she pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder and first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon.
Rodriguez was tried first.
Prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty, but Michelle Paet, 33, still faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
“The guy knew what he was doing”, she said.
Nathan Paet’s mother, Carmelita Paet, said outside the courtroom that she accepted the apology but it doesn’t bring her son back.
Prosecutors allege that Paet enlisted Rodriguez and two different individuals to kill her husband in a bid to gather $650,000 in life insurance coverage.
Rodriguez, along with three others were charged in Paet’s death. Austin is accused of being an accessory after the killing.
Michael Rodriguez, 34, won’t be allowed to appeal the sentence, according to a report from KSNV, an NBC affiliate in Las Vegas.
Prosecutors said Rodriguez was armed and ready to ambush Nathan Paet when Michelle Paet alerted him by text message that her husband was leaving the house. “Lol”, one message said.
