Man United: ‘Amazing’ Rooney seals Reds win
United beat Swansea 2-1 on Saturday in an English Premier League (EPL) encounter courtesy strikes from Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney.
He was in danger of seeing more points dropped when Swansea, who had won their previous three games against United, equalised through a Gylfi Sigurdsson header with 20 minutes to play.
The win has taken the Red Devils to the fifth spot in the points table.
I think we played very risky, very attacking, with three defenders, but we wanted to win and scored two fantastic goals today.
It was his 238th United goal, taking him past Denis Law into second place in the list of all-time United scorers, and his 188th Premier League goal, putting him in second place behind Alan Shearer (260).
Much-travelled Louis van Gaal has coached some of the biggest clubs in world football but Manchester United’s fans are the best he has come across, the Dutch veteran said on Thursday.
It was Rooney’s first league goal in eight league matches and it was also the first time he and Martial had scored in the same Premier League game. “You can not always explain that, so, of course, we are looking always for solutions in the team”, he said.
Swansea are a bad team and the odds show that but they don’t show how bad United are.
“How many players have had the chances to score and why didn’t they score?”
That was the date Man United last won in the league before a 2-1 win over Swansea, sealed by a moment of brilliance by Wayne Rooney. It’s good to see both our main strikers scoring, and we hope we’ll kick on now, because we can’t afford any more slip ups.
The club have recorded seven goalless draws this term and in the last 25 league matches, they have only scored 25 goals. “After the equaliser it was not so easy but we believed in ourselves”.
Again Young was involved in a telling capacity as his cross was perfectly delivered for Martial, who had drifted into a more central position, to score with a powerful downward header from eight yards which bounced up and past Lukasz Fabianski to give the young Frenchman his eighth goal of the season. De Gea made a brilliant save from William’s shot while Swansea keeper Fabianski came very close to scoring in the dying minutes but thankfully, United finally had the win that was eluding them for so long to start 2016 on a positive note.
Suddenly United were back to square one but just when they needed him Rooney delivered.
