Man United’s Shaw ready to fly home after breaking leg
Shaw suffered a double fracture of his right leg after PSV Eindhoven defender Hector Moreno’s “very bad tackle” in Tuesday’s Champions League game.
Luke Shaw could return to England on Saturday, but Louis van Gaal has told the Manchester United defender he faces a tough physical and mental battle to return to peak form. He sounds very strong and is in good spirits, which is incredible for me.
“Maybe he will come back tomorrow and then he will have to go through a long period of rehabilitation. He’s out a long time now, he’s been through an operation and I just hope and I pray for him and his family they are OK right now”.
“I am not a doctor so I cannot say that but when you have a double fracture it is six months and he will not play in the group phase I think”.
The immediate cost of the injury for United is the end of the developing left-wing partnership between the defensive Shaw and the more attacking Memphis Depay ahead of him.
Shaw had been one of United’s stand out performers in the opening weeks of the season and Van Gaal must now find someone to deputise in his absence. For us it is a big loss, as a team.
“We are talking here about a kid who is only 20, and the way the medical profession can deal with this kind of major injury now, it shouldn’t have any effect on him in the long term”.
“We offered him help and asked if there was anything we could do”.
Despite Moreno showing remorse for the tackle which contributed heavily in Shaw’s horrendous leg break, the defender was handed the “Man of the Match” award by UEFA following his display.
With former Southampton full-back, Luke Shaw, out for a considerable amount of time, the sooner defensive reinforcements arrive the better, say the usual punters turned pundits here in the Transfer Tavern!
Signed for a down payment of £36.8 million from Monaco during the transfer window, Martial was expected to play a small role in United’s campaign, with Van Gaal openly talking of him being a signing for the future. “But we have in Blind, Rojo and in Ashley Young, good replacements”. “Only Luke Shaw is injured”, the boss added.
Moreno, who suffered a broken leg while playing for Mexico against Van Gaal’s Holland at last year’s World Cup, insisted, however, that Shaw’s injury was an accident. “I feel really sorry”.
