Man who posted wife’s corpse on Facebook found guilty
A jury on Wednesday found a Florida man guilty of second-degree murder after he killed his wife and posted a photo of her blood-spattered body on Facebook.
Derek Medina claimed he acted in self-defence when she pulled out a knife and threatened him at their home in Miami, Florida, in August 2013. Medina, who killed his wife and posted a photo of the bloody corpse on Facebook, was convicted after failing to convince a jury that he shot her eight times in self-defense.
On the other hand, persecutors said that the very fact that Medina, who worked as a small-time actor, shot Alfonso eight times and then uploaded the photo on Facebook tells its own story.
Prosecutors were expected to seek a life sentence at a hearing set for January.
“Far, far too often this kind of domestic violence leads to injury and death”, Fernandez Rundle said.
“I’m going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife”, Medina posted. They also pointed out that at 6 feet and about 200 pounds, Medina could have easily overpowered his 5-foot-6 wife without shooting her. His attorney said he will appeal the conviction. Medina, who appeared as an extra on USA’s drama “Burn Notice”, went upstairs, where Alfonso’s 10-year-old daughter was sleeping, and grabbed his gun to shoot his wife.
Medina and Alfonso had a tumultuous relationship, marrying and divorcing and then marrying again, court records show.
Medina told police in a videotaped statement he shot 27-year-old Jennifer Alfonso after years of abuse and during an argument in which she assaulted him with a knife.
As the 12 jurors were polled by the judge, Alfonso’s mother quietly teared up and dabbed her eyes with a tissue.
Medina was also convicted of child neglect, since he left his daughter alone in the house after the shooting.
Prosecutor Leah Klein said in her closing argument that Medina coldly shot his wife at close range as she likely was cowering on her knees rather than punching and shoving him as he claimed.
