Manager says former Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland dead at 48
Scott Weiland, the gravelly-voiced, often substance-addled singer of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, is dead at 48. The details surrounding the singer’s death will be released Friday.
Rock singer Scott Weiland has died, multiple sources confirmed on Thursday night. He formed the Grammy-winning band Stone Temple Pilots, and was a member of supergroup Velvet Revolver.
Ryan Adams tweeted a link to Stone Temple Pilots song Sour Girl and added the caption: “RIP Scott Weiland “Universe, please take care of him (sic)”.
Music lore said that in 1986, Weiland was talking with bassist Robert DeLeo at a concert and while discussing their girlfriend – realized they were dating the same woman.
In a recent report by Blabbermouth, Scott Weiland expressed his intentions to reunite with Stone Temple Pilots after he learned the news of Bennington’s exit.
The family moved back to California when Weiland was a teenager, and he has said that he had difficulty fitting in at his new high school; he said he started experimenting with drugs and alcohol after playing varsity football.
In 1995, Weiland was convicted of buying crack cocaine and sentenced to probation while he was reportedly admitted to rehab in 2007 for heroin addiction. He pleaded guilty to felony heroin possession in 1998.
Weiland was kicked out of STP by 2013, after which the band remained active.
Former MTV VJ and longtime radio personality Matt Pinfield wrote on Facebook “I am speechless … and sad at the loss of my friend, and although many of you are probably not surprised”. He adopted the last name Weiland when his mother remarried and the family moved to a suburb of Cleveland, according to the Los Angeles Times. He also released four studio albums, a cover album and a live album as a solo artist.
Wife Jamie Wachtel, who he Wednesday in 2013 is left behind by Scott.
