Manchester City vs Celtic
Manchester City qualified second in Group C after playing out a 1-1 draw with Celtic in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Manchester City’s recent history may be filled with domestic success, but manager Pep Guardiola said his side go into the Champions League knockout phase as European novices.
Manchester City will have to rely on young Iheanacho to lead the line in the coming weeks with star striker Sergio Aguero set to miss the next four games in the league as a result of his second ban of the season. We know his quality but the decision is not for one game – it is for one season and that perspective. Of course he has good qualities as a winger, one-on-one and he worked defensively, he has potential.
It was a sweet moment for the teenager, who joined City in an £11million deal past year but then moved to Celtic on an 18-month loan in February having barely registered on the first-team radar.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was more forthcoming on the display of his current charge, and believes Guardiola would be impressed by his display.
“At the end Pep said well done and keep it up for the rest of the season, which was nice of him”.
Leigh Griffiths and Gary Mackay-Steven passed up late chances to claim a consolation win for Celtic in a game where their opponents struggled for fluency throughout and Roberts paid tribute to Rodgers, who he credits for developing him during this fledgling stage of a career that promises much.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed there were 13 arrests yesterday in the city, including one Celtic supporter who threw a burger at a police horse.
“Now we are there and Monday we are going to see the draw and we’re going to see how is our level in February”.
Group C in the Champions League has already had its outcome determined, but there’s still one match to be played.
Few would bet on Celtic pulling off a shock with the side claiming only one win in 26 attempts on the road in the competition. This means that the Football Association has increased the usual three-game suspension to four.
Iheanacho had a flicked shot saved, Nolito had a goal disallowed and Sane fired just wide from a free kick, but Celtic also troubled City at the other end in an open game at Etihad Stadium. Our performances at home were really good.
And, with January fast approaching, speculation is increasing about who Guardiola may try and sign to bolster his squad, and also who he may let go to make room for more additions.
“I like all the players to play”.
