Manchester City vs. Tottenham score, highlights: Spurs, Dele Alli storm back
Jan 21 Second-placed Tottenham Hotspur rode their luck to battle back and earn an unlikely 2-2 Premier League draw at Manchester City on Saturday after mistakes by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris had left them two goals down.
But the top of the standings is confounding expectations in the second half of the season.
Spurs have slipped to third place in the table after being held by Pep Guardiola’s side and are now nine points adrift of pacesetters Chelsea.
After a promising start to the season, City’s fortunes have fallen tremendously, with Pep Guardiola now conceding that the title is out of reach for a club that demands success.
Stats: Only Chelsea (7) have won more Premier League games away at the Etihad than Tottenham (6, level with Arsenal and Man Utd).
Has Guardiola lost the Midas touch?
“The result was the same so now it’s about how he adapts his programme”, said Mauricio.
“He needs time. He’s in a position that is still that they can win titles”.
“We played really good but we missed a lot of chances and when that happens you can not win”. Guardiola has every right to be upset, although he’ll know deep down that his side should have secured the win by that stage.
City racked up six successive wins in the league before losing 2-0 at Tottenham on October 2.
“We conceded two and it was hard to come back but they always believed, that is important”.
For the 19-year-old Jesus, Guardiola played a big part in deciding his next destination. I’m very honest with myself. “City were better but football is sometimes about belief”. It’s not changed my opinion of him.
City were cruising, 2-0 up after 58 minutes.
“But we have to be really careful about how we say this because we don’t want to encourage players to dive or to cheat”.
Gabriel Jesus featured on the bench in his first game for Manchester City, while Leroy Sane returned to the starting line-up from injury. City came with a game plan to press, we were a bit slow on the ball, bit slow pressing and it was down to the players.
History has now repeated itself, with the Belgian centre-back facing six weeks on the sidelines – and, again, Wimmer is now set for an extended run in the side.
Then, in one of the most controversial plays of the seasonseason, Raheem Sterling had a one-on-one chance with Lloris in the box.
There’s a switch in focus next weekend as City return to FA Cup action with a fourth-round tie at Crystal Palace.
“I was watching thinking Tottenham haven’t played well but they’re still in it”.
“But Bravo I’m sure will be decisive for City”.
