Manchester United deny Louis van Gaal offered to quit
Manchester United have denied Louis van Gaal offered to resign following Saturday’s 1-0 home loss to Southampton – with reports on Tuesday suggesting his position at the club won’t be reviewed until the summer.
The Independent on Sunday published a report claiming that former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has written a six-page letter to Manchester United pointing out why the club should hire him to succeed Louis Van Gaal.
The loss was United’s sixth of the season in the Premier League and the team was booed off by a livid crowd at the Theatre of Dreams.
However, it is believed that the Welshman wants a permanent role and substantial funds to spend in order to shape his own team.
Behind the scenes severe problems are beginning to take shape though, with Ashley Young and Marouane Fellaini both feeling Van Gaal has ruined their chances of featuring at the European Championships at the end of the season.
He added: “I agree with them, so it doesn t have any impact (on me)”.
Van Gaal admitted on the weekend that he had failed to meet Manchester United fans’ hopes.
The 20-time English champions managed to register one shot on target before Southampton substitute Charlie Austin scored an 87th-minute victor at Old Trafford.
“It’s not for me, I’m not the spokesperson for Manchester United”. For me, what we did in the past was great, but you have to have the players to do that.
Meanwhile, Mata – who came on as a half-time substitute in the defeat – said in a message posted on his blog on Monday: “Once again I’m writing with a bad taste”.
The message understood to be coming from the board early on during that run of results was one of full support for Van Gaal, but it will be interesting to see how things develop from here.
“Yes, because it was very clear”, he said.
Van Gaal, who has spent over £250million since joining United, bridled at the suggestion he has been wasteful in the transfer market.
“We have also sold a lot of players”.
“We won the league in 2003 but then had a barren period with Sir Alex Ferguson”.
