Manchester United leading race for goalkeeper Sergio Romero?
Argentina goakepper Sergio Romero is set for a medical at Manchester United as the transfer merry-go-round continues.
The Argentina global is a free agent at the moment after his contract expired with Sampdoria, having spent the 2013/14 campaign out on loan with Monaco as back-up to Danijel Subasic.
However, with the Spaniard no nearer to completing his proposed move to Real Madrid, it’s now become clear that van Gaal may actually have been eyeing competition for De Gea after the Dutch boss confirmed Victor Valdes is set to be sold after refusing to play for the reserves.
Los Blancos are now on pre-season tour in Australia and Ramos has been actively taking part in Rafa Benitez’s sessions.
This latest instalment in United’s goalkeeper saga suggest the club have sounded out World Cup and Copa America finalist Sergio Romero ahead of the 2015/16 Premier League season.
The Mirror also report that Mason Holgate, the young Barnsely defender who has been with United on trial, has sufficiently impressed Van Gaal that he will be signed this summer.
The 28-year-old was released by Serie A club Sampdoria at the end of last season and is available on free transfer.
“If David De Gea moves on then they think Romeo could be one of the candidates”.
De Boer said: “For us it would be a disaster if that’s going to happen because it’s already very hard to find a good goalkeeper, especially if you have the best goalkeeper in Holland”.
