Manchester United must snap up these 2 La Liga stars in January
Manchester United and Arsenal shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in Saturday’s early kick-off.
Mourinho’s men did manage to take the lead in the second period when Spain global Juan Mata stroked home from inside the area to send the fans into raptures.
Arsenal have not won at United in the league since September 2006 and Wenger admitted his side’s dismal record at Old Trafford had crossed his mind as he watched from the bench.
“I thought we were going to have the ball”, said Mourinho.
“We need to turn these draws into wins”.
Wenger is clearly sick of the sight of Mourinho, with the Arsenal boss yet to conquer his Portuguese nemesis in competitive action, 12 and a half years after their first encounter.
Wenger saluted his side’s “good spirit” to keep plugging away in a game where they were a distant second-best.
“I am convinced that he will make a great team”, Sneijder told Gazzetta dello Sport.
Mourinho looked at the opposition, decided the player was not quite up to it and chose Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford instead.
He said: “I don’t want to hear it”. “We were the best team by far”. “Arsenal are a team who let the opponents play”.
“He comes to Manchester United and he’s got no pace and the fee is well over the odds”. “Pogba, Carrick, Herrera, they are playing very well”.
But referee Andre Marriner said no, leaving Mourinho to rage on the touchline.
But he was given a first Premier League start this term after he apologised to Guardiola for “misunderstandings of the past” and the Ivory Coast midfielder made up for lost time as he put City ahead with a powerful strike from inside the penalty area in the 39th minute. Yet it developed into a boring affair until Mourinho finally got animated, screaming for a penalty when Antonio Valencia appeared to be brought down in the box by Nacho Monreal. “You won’t be surprised by that”.
However, the England global believed he could have made life harder for Mata before the Spaniard’s low shot gave United the lead.
His opposite number Wenger acknowledged that it was a hard match for Arsenal, but that the result was satisfying given the scoreline just before Giroud equalised.
Wenger introduced Giroud for Mohamed Elneny, which saw Sanchez, whose influence had dimmed, withdraw to the left flank, and Granit Xhaka also entered the fray.
Arsenal had not troubled United goalkeeper David de Gea until Giroud climbed to head home fellow substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross.
