Manchester United remove Matt Busby plaque from Old Trafford Director's Box
Joe Norman wrote: “This plaque should stay in what was Sir Matt’s seat in memory of the man who rebuilt the club after WW2 and nearly gave his life for the club in Munich, and went on to build United into the Kings of Europe and he has left a legacy that will be remembered forever”.
Busby recovered from injury in the disaster to build one of Manchester United’s most celebrated teams, going on to win the club’s first ever European Cup. Busby himself, survived the crash despite spending two months in hospital after the crash.
The Scot boss would then go on to make a comeback and rebuild a legendary and an all-conquering team consisting of players like Bobby Charlton, Dennis Law, and George Best.
Fans hit out at the club after reports in the Manchester Evening News revealed a plaque dedicated to the Busby family (not, as originally thought, to Sir Matt directly) had been removed.
“United play on being the family club with all this history but this kind of treatment is callous”.
Regarding the family’s directors’ box seats, Busby’s granddaughter Amanda Eustace told the M.E.N: “My dad always said it was a privilege to have those box tickets”. Following his death, the seats were then used by his children, who are now deceased, and finally to his grandchildren.
Following his death in 1994 the directors’ box seats were transferred to his children Sandy and Sheena, who both died in the 2014-15 season, but those seats are no longer available to the family.
Busby’s grandchildren have now been given new season tickets in the Warwick Suite area of the stadium.
But the user added: “Sadly past year both of Sir Matt’s children died but before then they could give those allocated seats to family members if they were not going themselves. We still do have season tickets, which is absolutely fantastic”.
“In the directors’ box there are a number of seats with small name plaques on the underside”.
An online petition calling for United to reinstate the plaque – which the club could not confirm had definitely been removed when contacted by Press Association Sport – has been started.
