Manchester United’s Luke Shaw suffers double fracture in PSV defeat
After Luke Shaw was stretchered off with what looks like a serious injury, Louis van Gaal will be scratching his head on how to fill the gap that the 20-year-old has left in his defence.
Depay, who helped PSV win the Eredivisie league previous year by chipping in 22 goals, speculated before the match that his boyhood club’s fans would allow him the indulgence of celebrating should he knock one in for his new team.
Luke Shaw suffered a horrific double fracture of his right leg during Manchester United’s Champions League defeat at PSV Eindhoven. “You can judge for yourself when I say it is a penalty and a red card I am a bad loser every word is interpreted in the wrong way”, the manager said. “That doesn’t mean he doesn’t play against PSV Eindhoven but today he wasn’t what I expected”, Van Gaal said after the game, where the debut goal of teenage signing Anthony Martial attracted the weekend headlines. After being on top for large periods during the first half, United will be ruing the chances they had to kill the game off before the interval. If any player goes off with this kind of injury, everybody is very sad about it. Also our players, because it is never the intention of our players to injure an opponent. The supporters were fantastic.
They are unbeaten this season, two points off the leadership of the league, and warmed up for Tuesday’s group tie with an emphatic 6-0 win at South Carolina Cambuur.
Luciano Narsingh and Hector Moreno found the net as the Dutch champions recorded a narrow triumph over United, who visit St Mary’s this weekend, on their first Champions League match in 17 months.
Moreno apologised for the challenge after the match, insisting the unfortunate contact with Shaw’s leg was entirely accidental.
Moreno nodded in a corner in first-half injury time after Memphis Depay had put United ahead.
Depay’s goal was a breathtaking display of footwork, set up by fellow Dutchman Daley Blind, who was jeered throughout the game because of his previous connection to Ajax Amsterdam.
United dominated the exchanges in the second half but were caught out by a sucker punch early on as they pressed high up the pitch.
United had a chance to reply soon after when Bastian Schweinsteiger chipped into the box, but Juan Mata mis-controlled with the goal gaping.
