Mangino out as Iowa State’s offensive coordinator
Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads announced on Monday that Mark Mangino will no longer be the team’s offensive coordinator for the Cyclones. But it’s about leading a really big organization.
According to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, the rift between Rhoads and Mangino has been building for a while.
Whatever the philosophical differences were that led to the parting, Mangino can at least take solace in the fact that Iowa State’s biggest offensive output of the season – and lone Big 12 victory – came in a 38-13 rout of his former Jayhawks on October 3.
Rhoads said he and Mangino couldn’t agree on a few important items.
Rhoads made the surprise announcement that Mangino, the former Kansas head coach, has left the program just seven games into his second season with Iowa State. They are eighth in the league in scoring at 26.9 points per game.
Iowa State is 2-5, by the way. Lanning completed 12 of 17 passes for 144 yards and three touchdowns Saturday in the 45-27 loss at Baylor.
That resulted in several players discovering the news as it broke on Twitter at the same time as fans.
Lanning found out he would be starting from Sturdy early Monday. His son, Tommy, is the wide receivers coach for ISU, and Rhodes did say that the younger Mangino will be sticking with his role on the team.
