Manning staying home as Broncos travel to San Diego
That’s how Osweiler and coach Gary Kubiak characterized Osweiler’s starting status Wednesday amid rampant speculation that the Broncos should stick with the longtime backup with the offense humming along with big wins over Chicago and New England. This season has been no reflection of the success he has had in the National Football League over the years.
Whether it be learning a new offensive system, injury, age catching up to the 39-year-old, or a combination of all these things, there are many theories behind the issues Manning has been facing this season. The Broncos needed to make something happen and Anderson was about to be stopped on third down.
After practice, Kubiak said nothing’s changed from his perspective: Osweiler’s his quarterback this week and the goal is to try to get Manning healthy and back on the field as soon as possible.
With the Broncos down 22-0 and the game seemingly out of reach, Osweiler made the most of his time throwing for 146 yards and one touchdown. Three of the Chargers top five pass catchers this year are Woodhead (52 catches), tight end Antonio Gates (33 catches) and fellow tight end Ladarius Green (29 catches).
Not that Osweiler is flawless, but the main thing about him right now is that he isn’t making the offense worse. Come on, tell me you haven’t considered it: The Broncos play at New England in the AFC championship game and Osweiler isn’t able to play. Anderson and Ronnie Hillman with the aim being supposedly to take the offensive pressure off of his aging quarterback’s arm.
That was quite possibly one of the best football games I’ve ever watched. With that being said, the 2015 season has shown a side of Manning not many people are accustomed to seeing. Osweiler however, seems the ideal fit.
It’s not often that a franchise can lose a generational talent at quarterback and have the ability to hit the ground running the next season; the Broncos, and Elway, know that all too well.
Still, even with all those contracts the Broncos are sure to hand out, Elway will have plenty of room to make a splash in free agency, especially if he’s willing to make some more tough choices; that’s quite the luxury. “When they play well, it makes our jobs that much easier”.
Denver Broncos defensive players T.J. Ward and Sylvester Williams were considered day-to-day earlier in the week due to ankle injuries suffered in the game against the Patriots. Having only played a handful of National Football League games, mainly in the preseason, many question the young quarterback’s inexperience.
Goodman threw out a handful of arguments to state that he wasn’t worthy of enshrinement from the team built around him, but in particular that he wasn’t one of the best quarterbacks of his era (citing Manning, Brady, Rodgers and Roethlisberger). It will be the fourth straight game he has missed.
Two games is hardly enough to judge a quarterback by any means. At the end of the segment, both agreed that there really isn’t a controversy until Manning is finally healthy.
Brock Osweiler has all of the momentum right now.
