Manning to stay behind in Denver once again
The backup quarterback showed again why Denver coaches were confident the team – which has a stout defense – wouldn’t miss a beat when Osweiler replaced Manning. His smile unflinching, he began to parse his latest performance, only his third as a starting National Football League quarterback.
He took blame for his mistakes.
“I’m just very impressed with how he’s come back and worked”, Kubiak said. Thomas did do well to secure all of his targets one game after managing a single reception on 13 looks. “They have no idea how much that means to us. We’ll see what the future holds for the Raiders next week”.
The Broncos (10-2) have won all three of Osweiler’s starts, including Sunday’s 17-3 win over the San Diego Chargers. Yes, an ineffective offensive line certainly has stunted Gordon’s abilities this year, but the former Badger just hasn’t seemed entirely comfortable in the offensive system to date.
The leading receivers were Antonio Gates (6 catches, 50 yards), Donald Brown (1 catch, 31 yards), and Javontee Herndon (2 catches, 30 yards).
He said last week that he had been bothered with plantar fasciitis for some time this season but that he suffered the tear in the Broncos’ Nov. 8 loss in Indianapolis.
So he managed – not perfectly, but well enough.
Last week, Manning said he’s done as much lifting as he could while his leg was immobilized, first in a walking cast for a week and then in a walking boot for a few days. “But at the same time, it doesn’t give you comfort, it doesn’t make you relax”. “As a coach, you feel that, and I talked to him right after the game”. Who will win this game?
Denver took a 7-0 lead by ripping through the Chargers defense easily on its first possession. As he was facing pressure, Phillip Rivers tried to get the ball to his wideout, but Danny Trevathan would jump the route and take the Rivers pass 25 yards for the pick six. “As far as doing some other things, he’s been doing a lot working out, lifting, a lot of upper body stuff trying to do all that he can to get some type of cardio involved”. “Getting a win last week, getting another week of preparation, Play a division opponent, we’ll be riled up and ready to go”.
Osweiler completed 16 of 26 passes for a touchdown and 166 yards.
Led by Ronnie Hillman, Anderson and Juwan Thompson, the Broncos rushed for 135 yards rushing on 38 carries.
Osweiler guided the offense Kubiak intended from the get-go, all while exuding the confidence and control of a season veteran. “I’m sure I can play better”. “Absolutely not”, Osweiler said.
“He did say there’s no immediate, quick or magic fix or can’t guarantee you this – that’s why we’re kind of going one week at a time”. This is the type of game that happens annually with a good team on the road, taking on a bad team and the lesser team finds a way to get the job done.
