That move, followed by other state errors, has led to a public health crisis, allegations of a state government cover-up, and Saturday’s declaration of a federal emergency in Flint by President Barack Obama. The problem began in April 2014, when, in a cost cutting measure under a state-appointed emergency manager, the city switched from Detroit’s water supply to water from the Flint River.
Residents complained about the water’s taste, smell and appearance, and children were found to have elevated levels of lead due to the water supply; lead exposure can cause behavior problems and learning disabilities in children.
Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow said she will push for long-term resources, and U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, also a Democrat, said residents “deserve every resource available to make sure they have safe water and are able to recover from this bad man-made disaster created by the state”.
Snyder is expected to address the crisis in his State of the State address Tuesday night.

In response to a continuing water crisis in Flint, Michigan, a resident in the town has launched a GoFundMe campaign aimed at providing clean water for Flint citizens.
The national furor comes as budget cuts in the city’s water regulations from years ago have now led to a health emergency in the depleted city of 100,000.
Snyder told the Journal that the Flint water crisis is “clearly a negative on what we’ve accomplished since I’ve become governor”. The lead contamination of Flint’s drinking water is a manmade catastrophe.
“The state of emergency only gives us a $5 million cap”, explains Flint City Councilman Wantwaz Davis”, adding that a disaster declaration would provide $96 million or more.

State Attorney General Bill Schuette is also taking action and said he will investigate how the crisis unfolded in an effort to determine if any laws were broken. Rev.
