Marcus Mariota leads Tennessee Titans to overtime win at New Orleans
Titans CB Perrish Cox gave up three long passes and left in the first half with a strained hamstring….
Last week was an absolutely miraculous performance from Saints’ star quarterback Drew Brees. Despite getting outplayed for most of the game, New Orleans was in great position to steal a win when Brees connected with Willie Snead for a 22-yard gain to the Titans’ 33 with about a minute and a half to play.
It is good to see this for Mularkey, but more importantly the Titan players.
Oddly enough, the Saints might not have been in that situation had they eschewed an extra point attempt earlier in the fourth quarter. Mariota said he tried to heave the ball out of bounds. The victory snapped the Titans’ six-game losing streak, which cost head coach Ken Whisenhunt his job earlier in the week.
Penalty parade: The teams combined for 17 penalties for 141 yards. Succop attempted a 55-yard field goal to give the Titans the lead, but it hit the front of the crossbar and bounced back into the end zone. “So I would be 99 percent in their corner; but I really don’t know exactly what’s going on”. “But we settled down quickly and played football”.
What do you guys think about this game and what are your final score predictions? “But even if the calls didn’t go in our favor, we had to settle down and continue to play football”.
Still shaking, Mularkey said in the press conference after the game that it “has been an emotional week, quite a week for everybody.to have an outcome like that…” “You are struggling, fighting, scratching and trying to win”. Mularkey said that the team will take a look at the offensive scheme and could make a few changes to help Mariota develop, according to Pro Football Talk. That is not acceptable. That could cost us the game. Seven touchdowns is a bit too many to ask for this week, but we are going to go out on a limb and predict that he throws at least five of them this week. “We had a sequence of about two of three things that happened”. The opportunity to protect Brees and keep the defense on the sidelines for the rest of the game was gone.
The Colts ruled out linebacker Nate Irving for the second straight game because of a knee injury. The Titans suffer from an similar inequality, showing “riches” in their week one victory versus Tampa Bay and this week’s victory versus the Saints but “plight” in their weeks two through eight losses. “It was a game, despite the imperfections and how we played, we had a chance still at the end and we weren’t able to execute”.
Ingram ran the ball with intensity, but there wasn’t much going for New Orleans in the way of running lanes. There were explosive plays that he left out there. “It was all good for him, all positive things”.
There’s no taking Mariota’s huge game away from him, and he’ll rank better heading into next week against Carolina, but any huge game by a quarterback against the porous Saints defense has to be taken with a grain of salt. He had 88 yards on 19 carries.
Brees got his second touchdown pass on their next possession as he found Brandin Cooks over the top of the Titans defence and he ran into the endzone for the 38-yard score.
The former Western Kentucky standout also caught a 23-yard pass.
“We got the ball out of his hands quicker”, Mularkey said.
Now, I’m having a hard time ignoring history. But he’s a young player.
