Reinhold and military officials said Abdulazeez’s rampage lasted three to five minutes after he crashed his auto through a security gate, left the vehicle with an assault weapon and a handgun, began firing outside the reserve center and continued shooting once inside.
Authorities did not say whether or not the service member was authorized to carry a weapon at the facility, with Reinhold saying that’s something the military could look into. Reinhold said the Federal Bureau of Investigation was treating the gunman as a “homegrown violent extremist”, and he said investigators believe he had no help in executing the attack. “We don’t have any indication anyone else was assisting him”.
Nonetheless, FBI investigators in the U.S. discovered that “Abdulazeez wrote about suicide and martyrdom as long ago as 2013”. Investigators are combing through his electronic communications and his travel history, including a seven-month stay in Jordan past year. Computers and cellphones were taken from the man’s home, but he has not been charged with anything, the attorney said.
Currently, investigation of the shooting has enlisted as many as 700 to 1,000 FBI agents, reports ABC News.

NBC News reported on Tuesday that Abdulazeez downloaded audio recordings of Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical cleric and al Qaeda recruiter killed by an American drone strike in 2011. Shots were fired from at least one, but it’s not yet clear if the gunman was hit by fire from one of those weapons, Reinhold said.
