Marisa Tomei Is Marvel’s New Spider-Man’s New Aunt May – Io9
It’s not your imagination – Peter Parker’s Aunt May really is getting younger with each new actress named to the role.
Sources tell Variety that Marisa Tomei is the choice to play Aunt May in the next installment of the Spider-Man franchise. That conception is of an older woman, white hair often worn up in a tight bun, and deliberately written as much older than Peter’s parents, to create a large generational divide between her and Peter. The aunt who maybe snuck you a drink at family functions even though you were only 17?
The role of Aunt May is a move away from her usual work, which includes the heavy duty drama films The Ides of March, and The Wrestler.
The latter won her an Oscar. The 50-year-old actress will next be seen in Trainwreck with Amy Schumer.
It’s not necessarily a bad thing to have a younger aunt in the picture, though concerns about her frail health are a time-honored Spider-Man comic book tradition.
For the 2017 remake, Jon Watts has been chosen to direct the film. They also reveal that Marvel and Sony are hoping to round out the cast for the film, in order to craft a solid shooting schedule, before officially hiring a writer for the project.
That won’t be our first look at Holland as Spider-man, as he’s due to appear in Captain America: Civil War, although it’s believed this will be little more than a cameo.
